For starts, any possible starter Pokemon has comparatively higher stats than the typical non-starter Pokemon, and stat spreads may not always be 1 to 1 with the main games either. The post-game is just as long as the game, and you can obtain the vast majority of the first 4 generation pokemon with some effort. It always feels like you are truly going on an adventure, and the plot just keeps getting better. Super Mystery Dungeon is also very nice as well as Rescue Team DX, and I haven't played Gates to Ininity. Mystery Dungeon game mechanics are often quite different compared to the mechanics of the mainline games, especially in the earlier ones. The game is touching, long, suspenseful and funny at the same time. These remakes surpass the originals, and that makes them the clear best. It has a really nice plot and characters, the gameplay is still quite good even compared to later entries, and there's a lot of fun post game content. The games were also the first to let Pokémon follow behind the player, which would reappear in some Switch titles. It's on the 3DS VC and a great place to start for something of a PMD feel, including a strong story. It literally plays like a mix of a traditional RPG but with every dungeon being randomized like a PMD one, with traps and everything. There’s even an event that ties the rival closer to Giovanni, which was only implied in the original. Lufia the Legend Returns is a GBC RPG that's in my opinion, the best Mystery Dungeon game never named. In this game, these characters are not nameless and have more prominence in the plot. Gen 2 was unique in that it was the only generation to share an evil team with the one previous, which used largely leaderless minions of Team Rocket. They added much-needed improvements and also have plenty of features of their own, like adding the ability to choose the player character's gender. Changes aren’t limited to this type of quality of life improvements, though, as there are plenty of plot changes to add detail to the story. HeartGold and SoulSilver are remakes of the GameBoy Color's Gold and Silver and are the best remakes to come out of the franchise so far.
